BC Red Cedar Siding and its types

Real Cedar Profile Types

Western red cedar is nature's perfect siding material. Its natural oils make it resistant to decay and insects, and its smooth grain is exceptionally stable and durable when exposed to the sun and the elements. Western Red Cedar exterior siding or cladding comes in a spectrum of patterns and grades, including the one that is just right for your home’s style and your budget. Because western red cedar is 100% natural, it doesn't require any special handling, extra health protection or pose any cleanup problems. Composite substitutes that try to replicate natural cedar are messy, complicated and quite frankly an environmental waste. A lot of the red cedar wood siding you get today is from second growth, not necessarily older trees. The authentic red cedar has natural beauty, depth and character as well as durability, stability and work ability. Its perfect for finely crafted homes such as the ones we ( Conradcontracting.ca ) work on

Bevel Siding

Beveled Red Cedar Siding

Beveled Red Cedar Siding

Western Red Cedar bevel siding is the most widely-used siding type. It is produced by re-sawing lumber at an angle to produce two pieces thicker on one edge than the other. The manufacturing process results in pieces with one face saw textured.  Bevel siding is installed horizontally and gives an attractive shadow line which varies with the thickness of the siding selected.

Grades

Bevel siding is available in clear and knotty grades. Clear siding gives premium quality appearance and is ideal for prestigious, upmarket homes and applications. Knotty siding has warmthand character and is ideal for homes, cottages,  and applications where a rustic and charming appearance is desired.

Finger-Joined Bevel

You can find finger-joined bevel siding in clear and knotty grades. The precision-fitted joins are virtually invisible and stronger than the surrounding fiber. Finger-joined bevel siding is available in lengths up to 16 feet and provides the same handsome appearance and all-weather performance of premium cedar siding.

Board & Batten Siding

board-batten-siding

Board and batten is a vertical wood siding design ,created using wide clear or knotty cedar boards spaced apart with narrower boards (battens) covering the joins. You can design in various combinations which are used to create different looks suitable for large or small scale applications. A frequent combination is 1″x3″ battens and 1″x10″ boards. This can also be reversed with boards installed over battens to create a deep channel effect. The water just flows right off its smooth grain and vertical pattern, and the wood is naturally resistant to decay and insects - as all Red Cedar is

Texture and Sizes

Rough sawn, unseasoned boards or boards surfaced on one side and two edgesare commonly used for board and batten siding. Sizes are from 1″x 2″ to 1″x12″.

Tongue & Groove Siding

Western Red Cedar tongue and groove is quite versatile and can be installed horizontally, vertically or diagonally, each method giving a distinctly different look. Tongue and groove siding is available with rough or smooth faces. Both seasoned (kiln-dried) and unseasoned (green) sidings can be utilized to give an interesting look and distinct beauty, to your home

Joints

The joints between adjoining pieces are usually v-shaped but flush jointed, reveal and radius joints are also available. The different joints and surface textures in tongue and groove siding, combine to provide a range of shadow line effects that enhance the product’s versatility.

Grades

Tongue and groove siding is manufactured in clear grades suitable for a more formal, elegant appearance, particularly when pieces are smooth faced. Knotty grades are in demand for their smart, casual look.

Lap sidings are normally supplied in a variety of patterns either green (unseasoned) or dry in clear or knotty grades and with a smooth or saw textured face.

Channel Siding

Channel siding is a popular type of lap siding and is used whenever a rustic appearance is desired. A versatile siding, it can be installed vertically, horizontally or diagonally. In channel siding the profile of each board partially overlaps that of the board next to it creating a channel that gives shadow line effects, provides excellent weather protection and allows for dimensional movement.

Grades

Channel siding is normally supplied in unseasoned knotty grades. The face side is saw textured. Commonly available sizes are 1″x6″, 1″x8″, and 1″x10″. Clear grades are manufactured to order.

Trim Boards

Western Red Cedar trim boards are available in a variety of grades and textures to complement the style you have envisioned.

Clear boards have a limited number of natural characteristics which define them as "clean”,  they give a very fine and high quality appearance. They are also available kiln dried or unseasoned. If you wish a more rustic appearance then Knotty boards may be an alternate choice and they also come seasoned or unseasoned. You can further enhance your design by opting for Textured or rough, two edges and/or surfaced on all sides

Reno Mistakes you can avoid

1 Poor preparation
A proper renovation takes preparation, and lots of it. A detailed plan will help keep you on budget and on time. Set out a very specific agreement with your contractor before the work begins and get everything in writing. You should be able to see your renovation, laid out on paper before it even begins.

2 Buying stuff before you have a plan
Don’t buy materials or appliances until your renovation is planned out and all measurements have been taken.

3 Ignoring issues
When you tear down walls or rip up floors, there’s a good chance you’re going to find something you weren’t expecting. Electrical and plumbing issues need to be dealt with before you close the walls back up. It might be an unexpected renovation cost up front, but it will save you tons of money in the long run.

4 Cutting corners

Just like ignoring issues, cutting corners on materials or finishes is only going to cause you problems in the future. It’s better to go the extra mile and do it right the first time than have to go back and redo everything. Hire competent trades/designers to do the job, buy quality materials and take the time to complete all the necessary steps.

5 Unlicensed trades
There are projects that any reliable contractor can take on; then there are specialized projects that require a licensed professional to complete. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, asbestos removal and anything to do with gas or the structure of your home should always be completed by a licensed professional in that specific trade. We only use licensed trades

Have fun!

New housing affordability measures announced in BC Budget 2016

For immediate release

Burnaby, British Columbia (February 16, 2016) - Effective February 17, the purchase of a qualifying new housing unit valued at up to $750,000 will be exempt from the Property Transfer Tax (PTT).

The cost of this measure will be offset by adding a third tier to the property transfer tax rate at 3 per cent on the portion of the fair market value over $2 million. The PTT had previously been applied as 1 per cent on the first $200,000 of the property market value and 2 per cent on the remainder.

"We have advocated that changes to the property transfer tax structure are long overdue and that B.C. home buyers deserve a reduction in taxes on housing," says CHBA BC CEO Neil Moody. "We are pleased to see the provincial government eliminate the PTT on new housing units up to $750,000."

Canadian residents and permanent residents who purchase their principal residence and live in the unit for a full year will be exempt from the PTT on newly built homes up to $750,000. This exemption is predicted to save the purchaser up to $13,000, and provides an estimated $75 million in property transfer tax relief for new construction in 2016-17.
